Don't Let Just Anyone Cut Your Trees

Damage done by humans is the number one reason for premature tree failure and death.  There are hundreds of self-proclaimed “tree experts” damaging trees around the region every day.  Whether this is due to a lack of knowledge, carelessness, or laziness, doesn’t matter.  Once the damage is done, it is done.  The tree’s owner is left to deal with the aftermath years after the poor work has been completed.

Types of Pruning

Crown Cleaning

Crown cleaning involves traversing the entire canopy of a tree, top to bottom, removing all dead branches, interfering (crossing) branches, as well as defective or diseased branches.  Crown cleaning is a detailed and intricate process that can take many hours on a large tree.  Timberline’s Arborists are held to the highest standard when it comes to a complete and thorough job, and we won’t rest until your tree is as beautiful and healthy as it can be.

Target Pruning

Target pruning is removing selected branches to achieve a specific goal.  These could be a couple of larger, dead branches, or possibly a branch that interferes with a light or flagpole.  This type of pruning is usually less involved than crown cleaning, and usually less expensive.

Clearance Pruning

One of the most common requests for work to be performed, clearance pruning is the process of creating clearance between a tree and a structure.  Typically a specific range of clearance is agreed upon, ie 10-12 feet, and the arborist on the job site will determine which branches to remove in order to achieve the desired clearance, while keeping the health and longevity of the tree in mind.

Vista Pruning

Vista pruning is the selective removal of certain branches to achieve or enhance a view.  This process is as much art as it is skill. Timberline Arborists work directly with the property owners to remove select branches, making your trees an accent to the view, rather than impeding it.

Pruning for Shape

Trees are living creatures, each one unique to its site, genetics and available resources.  Generally speaking, trees are not meant to be held to an unnatural shape, and doing so requires pruning on a near constant basis.  The Arborists at Timberline can provide suggestions on what works best for the tree and the owner, and develop a plan of action to achieve these goals.

Reduction Pruning

Reduction pruning, in accordance with national standards, is the removal of no more than 1/3 of the canopy of a tree to reduce its size, or mitigate risk.  This type of pruning is different than ‘Topping’ in that cuts are selective and always made to a lateral branch of proper size.  While it is within standards to perform reduction pruning, The Arborists at Timberline Professional Tree Care generally don’t recommend reduction pruning, as it is usually not necessary and creates many open wounds on a tree.  This practice is reserved for certain trees on strictly an as-needed basis.
